ADCC 2015 “Worlds” submission wrestling tournament began today (Sat., Aug. 29, 2015) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Check out the complete results recap below for the first day of competition.

Earlier today, the opening rounds of the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) grappling tournament concluded in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Recognized as the most prestigious No-Gi grappling competition in the world, ADCC was filled with top-notch jiu-jitsu practitioners as usual, as well as a few names recognizable from the mixed martial arts (MMA) world.

In fact, click here to see how a certain former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion’s match went.

On Day 1 of ADCC, the opening round and quarterfinal matches went down, leaving the semifinals and medal matches for tomorrow (Sunday). In addition, the day ended with a “super” fight between jiu-jitsu veterans Mario Sperry and Ricardo Liborio. It was a very competitive match, as Liborio won a referee’s decision after overtime.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the results for today’s match ups.

Male -66kg

In the under 66 kg division, 2013 gold medalist Ruben “Cobrinha” Charles advanced through the competition. After securing an early submission win in the opening round, “Cobrinha” next took out New Yorker Gianne Grippo via points. He’ll face off with Augusto Mendes tomorrow, one of the highly talented Mendes brothers.

Back in 2013, Charles defeated Rafael Mendes to earn the gold, so there’s definitely some intrigue surrounding this bout.

On the other side of the bracket, Bruno Frazzato and Geo Martinez moved into the semis. Both men won their matches on points, with Martinez notably defeating Jeff Glover in the quarterfinals after slamming his way out of a triangle choke.

Male -77kg

The under 77kg division had a number of UFC veterans. In the opening round, former UFC fighters Vagner Rocha and Milton Viera clashed. Rocha came out on top, but he ultimately fell to 2013’s silver medalist Otavio Souza. Souza will face off with Lucas Lepri, who outpointed a pair of opponents.

While former Lightweight kingpin Ben Henderson came up short quickly opposite Abdukadirov Magomed, a fellow UFC veteran avenged him. Lightweight prospect and accomplished grappler, Gilbert Burns, locked in an arm bar in the first round before defeating Magomed.

Tomorrow, Burns will wrestle Davis Ramos in the semis. It’s also worth mentioning that last year’s gold medalist, Kron Gracie, did not compete.

Male -88kg

Last year’s gold medalist, Romulo Barral, continued to find success in ADCC, submitting both of his opponents with kimuras. He’ll compete against Checkmat black belt Yuri Simoes tomorrow, who is looking to earn his first ADCC medal.

In addition, American wunderkind Keenan Cornelius advanced into the semis. One of America’s finest grapplers, Cornelius earned bronze in 2013, coming up short against Barral. Standing opposite him is Rustam Chsiev, who upset Rafael Lovato Jr. — 2013’s silver medalist and perhaps the most accomplished American grappler ever — in the quarterfinal match ups.

Male -99kg

Despite failing a drug test just a few months back and being banned from IBJJF competition for a year, Gracie Barra’s Felipe Pena won a pair of matches to move into the semis. He’ll meet Joao Assis, 2013’s gold medalist.

One of the best grappler’s ever, Xande Riberio, also advanced through the opening round. Then, he faced off with Hector Lombard, defeating the top welterweight via points. He’ll face off with Rodolfo Viera, who earned his position in the semis with a pair of rear naked choke victories.

Male +99kg

Former UFC light heavyweight and M-1 Champion, Vinny Magalhaes, also competed. While the Brazilian’s MMA career has been a bit disappointing, he proved that he’s still one of the finest and most unique no-gi submission fighters in the world by tapping out a pair of opponents, one via twister.

Tomorrow, he’ll grapple with Joao Rocha, who upset Dean Lister in the quarterfinals.

The other half of the semis is made up of Joao Rocha vs Jarred Dopp. Rocha was 2013’s silver medalist, while Dopp ended up taking fourth place in that tournament.

Female -60kg

With just eight women competing in each division, each competitor grappled just once today. Michele Niccolini, 2013’s gold medalist, finished her opponent and moved into the semis, where she’ll compete opposite Tammy Musucemi.

Additionally, Mackenzie Dern — who fought to a draw with Niccolini in Metamoris — moved into the semifinals with a toehold victory. She’ll collide with Beatriz Mesquita, who defeated Mayra Mazza with an arm bar.

Female +60kg

Finally, Gabby Garcia continued her reign of dominance. It’s been quite some time since the 2013 gold medalist has lost — or even been challenged — but Jessica Oliveira will attempt to change that tomorrow in the semifinals.

On the other side of the brackets, Ana Lauta Cordeiro and Amanda Santana will compete.

There you have it.

Check back in tomorrow, as MMAmania will have the results of the final matches and absolute division.
